Sun King Celebrates Pride Month with Release of Amber Has Two Moms in Cans

    Wednesday, May 30, 2018

June marks Pride Month in Indianapolis and with the help of our community partnership with Indy Pride, we are ready to celebrate.

Indy Pride is a non-profit organization seeking to produce events to educate and celebrate the diversity of the Indianapolis LGBTQ+ community. Their hallmark event is the Indy Pride Festival and Parade, happening this year on June 9. The Cadillac Barbie Pride Parade begins at 10 a.m. at the intersection of College and Mass Ave. and travels through downtown until its end location at Historic Military Park at White River State Park. If you are going to the parade, look for the SKB Crew walking along side some of our local community partners as we support love and equality for all!

Pride Festival doors open at 11 a.m. for this all-ages event with two live music stages and a Family Fun Zone, along with vendors, food and drinks. Make sure to grab your tickets for this all-day event.

Pride Month also brings a limited release from the Sun King with Amber Has Two Moms. Amber Has Two Moms is an American Amber Ale with a beautiful red hue and a rich caramel malt flavor. This is the first time we have canned this beer, and we are very happy to announce that 10 percent of the proceeds are going to go right back to Indy Pride (cans and draft). We have also partnered with Louisville Pride and 10 percent of the proceeds of the beer sold in Louisville to benefit.

"Sun King has been such an incredible supporter of the LGBTQ+ Community and Indy Pride as an organization," Chris Handberg, Indy Pride executive director, said. "We are excited for everyone to enjoy Sun King at Indy Pride Fest this year, featuring their special Pride Beer: Amber Has Two Moms. Time and time again, Sun King has demonstrated their commitment to our community, we are humbled by their generosity, and are proud to call them friends."

Look for Amber Has Two Moms at the Sun King tap rooms and on shelves in metro Indy soon!

Know Before You Go: Bike to the Ballpark 2018

    Tuesday, April 03, 2018

Eight years ago we kicked off our very first Bike to the Ballpark for the Indianapolis Indians with some unpredictable "spring" weather. We have been fortunate over the years that Mother Nature has been kind to us and we have been able to watch the event continue to grow with more bike enthusiasts, craft beer lovers, and baseball fans joining together for celebration and a ride through downtown Indy to Victory Field.

Mother Nature has decided to be unpredictable (again!) and this Friday's (April 6th) projected forecast has forced us to move the pre-game celebration at Sun King Brewery inside! We welcome all-ages with open arms for this event. Oca at SKB will be open inside the brewery for snacks, sandwiches, and pizzas before the ride.

Our community partners, Yelp Indy | The HandleBar | Freewheelin' Community Bikes | Nine13sports | Indy Criterium Bicycle Festival | Indy YMCA, will be hanging out in the brewery with some fun activities.

Our recently remodeled tap room has a ton of seating where you can eat and drink. We will have 20+ styles of beer to choose from, including newly released Indians Lager and Freedom Rock. Click here for the most up to date list.

The ride is still on course! Mayor Joe Hogsett is scheduled to lead the ride with a 6:15pm departure time. Here's a map of the 2018 Bike Route:

If you are planning on joining the second ride or walking to Victory Field, here is what that route will look like on the Cultural Trail.

IndyCog is hosting a complimentary Pedal and Park inside of Victory Field just off of the Maryland Street entrance. All bikes must be picked up by 10pm.

Please keep in mind that parking at the brewery may be limited due to our shared parking lot. So please plan ahead (share a ride or bike!). Bike parking at the brewery will be in the South Parking Lot (off of Market Street). We will have signs up to direct you. Reminder: this will be unattended parking, so please be sure to bring a bike lock. Be sure to dress for the predicted colder weather.

Thank you for joining us for the 8th Annual Bike to the Ballpark. If you still need to purchase tickets to the Indians Opening Night, the Indians have a 2 for 1 ticket deal! Purchase your game tickets here. There is a 60 degree day guarantee for the game!

7th Collect Your Tabs Contest benefitting Ronald McDonald House Charities

    Tuesday, April 03, 2018

It's that time of year again!  Time to start collecting your tabs for our 7th Annual Collect Your Tabs Contest, benefitting the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Indiana!

We challenge you to collect aluminum tabs of all types and turn them in for various SKB prizes. Join forces with your co-workers, family, and friends to collect as many aluminum tabs (beer, soda, energy drinks, canned water) as you can now until Saturday, July 14th, 2018.

All collected tabs can be turned in on Saturday, July 14th at either of our Sun King locations (Downtown Indy or Fishers Tap Room). Those who have participated will be awarded various Sun King prizes (see below). The bounty of collected tabs will be dropped off at the 14th Annual Pop Tab & Coin Drop on Monument Circle on Friday, July 20th (11am-2pm) and then the Ronald McDonald House recycle all collected tabs!

Why Should You Collect Can Tabs?

Not only is the can tab important for the purpose of opening your favorite Independent Beer, it is also a valuable resource that generates much-needed funds to cover the operating costs to run the Ronald McDonald House to support families in need. Don't forget to recycle your cans too - that is important for our environment!

  • What does the Ronald McDonald House of Indiana do?

Nearly 5,000 families are served at the two houses each year while their children receive life-saving treatments at Indianapolis-area hospitals, including Riley Children's Hosiptal.  The Houses offer all of the comforts of home including restful places to sleep, spacious kitchens and dining rooms, play areas, a library, laundry facilities, and more.

Volunteers from the community prepare home cooked meals for breakfast and dinner daily in our spacious kitchen and a well-stocked pantry provides staples for guests to prepare their favorite lunch or snack.

With support from local McDonald’s owner/operators and community donors, RMHCCIN is also able to offer scholarships to high school seniors facing limited access to educational opportunities.

Funds received from the recycled tabs adds up to $30-$50K annually. These funds go towards the operating costs of the Ronald McDonald House and will cover the costs of operating 3 rooms in the House for an entire year.

    How Can You Help?

Help Sun King collect tabs by participating in the Save Your Tabs Challenge now until July 14th, 2018. Sun King will continue to collect tabs at various community events around town. Be sure to drop off your collected tabs on Saturday, July 14th, at either Sun King location. We will weigh your tabs and reward you with prizes, and then we’ll deliver the collective bounty of tabs to the Ronald McDonald House where it will go to help those in need.

For more information and resources, please visit:

Reminders: Please do not use plastic soda bottles or milk jugs because they’re hard to empty! Keep in mind if the tab sticks to a magnet, it cannot be used. Please check your tabs from soup and other cans - some are aluminum and can be used; others are steel and cannot.

    Fun Facts about Tabs:

  • 1 lbs = 1,267 Tabs
  • 1 inch = 1 pop tab
    1 foot = 12 pop tabs
    1 mile = 63,360 pop tabs

  • Cooking with Sun King: SKB IPA Let's Do Brunch Recipe

    Thursday, March 29, 2018

Sun King's Culinary Director, Steven Unrue, has prepared a three part series of recipes for the release of our year-round SKB IPA. We all know that you are supposed to eat three meals a day...Today's recipe is perfect for breakfast or brunch!

    Bagels and Lox

Servings: 12 | Active Prep Time: 2 hrs | Total Time: Up to 3 Days

    For the Bagels:

    Starter Ingredients

    1/2 cup unbleached bread flour

    1/4 cup SKB IPA

    Pinch instant yeast

    Starter Directions

Combine the starter ingredients in a medium-sized bowl, cover, and let rest at room temperature overnight.

    Dough Ingredients

    4 cups unbleached bread flour

    1 1/4 cups SKB IPA

    1 3/4 teaspoons salt

    1 1/2 teaspoons instant yeast

    Topping Ingredients

    1/4 cup everything bagel spice

    Bagel Directions

    1. To make the bagel dough:

The next day, combine the starter with all of the dough ingredients and knead by hand, mixer, or bread machine to form a smooth, stiff buy not dry dough. Place in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and set aside to rise for 1 hour.

Gently deflate the dough, and let it rise for another 30 minutes.

Transfer the dough to an unclouded work surface and divide it into 12 pieces. Roll each into a smooth ball. Cover the balls with plastic wrap and let them rest 30 minutes. They'll puff up very slightly.

While the dough is resting, prepare the water bath by heating the water and malt (or sugar) to a very gentle boil in a wide-diameter (about 10 inch) pan.

Preheat your oven to 450 Degrees F.

    Water Bath Directions:

Fill 10 inch pan with about 2 inches deep of water.

1 tablespoon non-diastatic malt powder or brown sugar.

    2. To shape the bagels:

Use your index finger to poke a hold through the center of each ball, then twirl the dough on your finger to stretch the hole until it's about 2 inches in diameter (the entire bagel will be about 3 inches across). Place each bagel on a lightly or parchment-lined baking sheet, and repeat with the remaining pieces of dough.

    3. To boil the bagels:

Transfer the bagels, three to four at a time if possible, to the simmering water. Increase the heat under the pan to bring the water back up to a gently simmering boil, if necessary. Cook the bagels for 2 minutes, flip them over, and cook 1 minute more. Using a skimmer or strainer, or the end of a wooden spoon, remove the bagels from the water and place them back on the baking sheet. Repeat with the remaining bagels.

    4. To bake the bagels:

Bake the bagels for about 25 minutes, or until they're as deep brown as you like. To top with seeds, remove the bagels from the oven after about 15 minutes, spray with water, and sprinkle with the seeds. Return to the oven to finish.

    5. Remove the bagels from the oven and cool completely on a cooling rack.

    For the Lox:

    Lox Ingredients

    1 tablespoon coriander, crushed

    1 teaspoon crushed red pepper

    1/3 cup kosher salt

    1/3 cup sugar

2-pound center-cut salmon fillet, skin on, cut in half crosswise

    1 bunch fresh cilantro

    3 tablespoons SKB IPA

    Lox Directions

In a small bowl, combine the salt, sugar, coriander and red pepper.

Line a baking dish with a large sheet of foil, leaving a few inches of overhang, and top with a piece of plastic wrap the same size. Place one piece of the salmon, skin-side down, in the dish; cover the fish evenly with the salt-sugar mixture, patting it down lightly.

Lay the cilantro over the salmon and sprinkle with the SKB IPA. Top with the remaining piece of salmon, skin-side up, and with the thickest area of the top piece matched to the thinnest area of the bottom piece. Wrap tightly in the plastic wrap, then again in the foil; top with another backing dish, and weigh down with a few heavy cans. Refrigerate for 3 days, turning the salmon every 12 hours, basting between the fillets with the accumulated juices each time.

When ready to serve, use a paper towel to scrape the cilantro and seasonings from the salmon. Transfer the salmon to a cutting board, and using a long, sharp knife held almost parallel to the board, slice diagonally to remove the skin. The gravlax can be refrigerated, tightly wrapped, for up to a week, or frozen for a month.

    Final Serving Ingredients

    Creme fraiche

    Sliced Red Onion

    Sliced Cucumber Coins

    To Serve

Halve fresh bagels, spread each half with creme fraiche, layer lox, red onion, cucumber, and top with capers. Enjoy!

SKB Community Partner Spotlight: Hoosier Environmental Council

    Wednesday, March 28, 2018

Hoosier Environmental Council is the voice of the people for the environment in Indiana. In 2018, we are celebrating 35 years of advocating for cleaner air, pristine rivers and lakes, healthier communities, thriving wildlife, and more abundant forests in Indiana.

You will find HEC at the Statehouse advocating for stronger environmental protections in our state or at a park along the free-flowing White River observing native bird species – and anywhere in between. April is known as Earth Month and you’ll find HEC all around Indiana educating Hoosiers about ways to be better environmental stewards. Check out our Calendar of Events to see when HEC will be near you.

Of course, we’re especially excited about spending time with you at Sun King Brewing in April. Join us on April 5 to learn more about composting from Earth Mama Compost – and take home a bag of compost that includes Sun King spent grains. Then, as part of Aveda Earth Month, you won’t want to miss getting a chair massage or hand treatment (by donation) from Evan Todd Salon & Spa on April 26.

It’s opportunities like these (among many other things!) that make us so grateful for our partnership with Sun King. Standing up for clean energy, sustainable agriculture, clean air and water, wildlife and their habitats, and environmental justice isn’t always a glamorous job. Doing it at a brewery gives us a chance to have some fun and meet cool people like you.

    Mounds Greenway

One of HEC’s initiatives is the Mounds Greenway, a sustainable plan to conserve the free-flowing West Fork White River and its floodplain forests, wetlands and other natural communities. The result will be a high quality linear park following the river, creating a regional trail network connecting Muncie to Anderson, and eventually to Indianapolis. Check the HEC calendar for ways to learn more and explore.

    HEC Green Business

Our partnership with Sun King started three years ago when we launched the HEC Green Business program. We carefully vet our HECGreenBiz partners to ensure that they share in our mission to help make Indiana a healthier, better place to live and do business. Sun King’s commitment to the Indianapolis community and to enriching the lives of Hoosiers makes them an important part of the sustainability movement in our state.

Thank you, Sun King, for making our voice stronger as we advocate to protect our air, water, and land resources in Indiana!

    March is Red Cross Month

    Wednesday, March 14, 2018

When you think of the American Red Cross, what do you think of? Do you think emergency preparedness plans? Disaster relief? CPR training? Installing and testing smoke alarms? Blood drives? If you answered yes to any of those questions you are right, the Red Cross does all that and so much more!

The truth is, not many people really think about the Red Cross until they need help. But the Red Cross is constantly working, training and getting ready every day to act when you need them most - in a time of disaster. As one of our Community Partners, Sun King works closely with our friends at our Indiana Red Cross chapter. We love what they do so much we made March Red Cross month at Sun King! Instead of taking tips in our tap rooms downtown or in Fishers, our staff donates every penny to organizations we feel are doing the best work in Indianapolis. For all of March, our tip jar donations from our downtown and Fishers tasting rooms go directly to the Red Cross. On Community Give Back Thursdays, we donate $1 from every growler fill to the Red Cross. We even hosted a blood drive on at our brewery to kick the month off!

With the unseasonal amount of flooding occurring in Northern Indiana, the Indiana Red Cross has been crucial in the relief and rebuilding efforts of these Hoosier communities. Due to their increased need and focus on the flooding in Northern Indiana, the Red Cross has been stretched thin and is in desperate need of blood and resources. To find out more information on how to donate money or blood to help support the Northern Indiana flooding relief please click here.

It’s not just local, either. According to the Red Cross, someone in the U.S. needs blood every two seconds! Accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients, and those receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease may all require blood. All blood types are needed. To make an appointment or to learn more, download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). The process is fast and easy, and you could save someone’s life! To find a local donation center close to you, click here!

You can also head over to the Indiana the Red Cross (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram) or Sun King social media handles to find out more cool facts and amazing work the Red Cross does in the whole state of Indiana. If you want to help, you can join the hundreds of thousands of people who have performed extraordinary acts of generosity so the American Red Cross can help those in need. The Indiana Red Cross truly is enriching the lives of Hoosiers, and we are proud partners and supporters of their mission.
