Recycle Force

On Saturday, March 9, RecycleForce will be at Sun King during their Tasting Room hours (1-4 p.m.) for an e-waste recycling collection. Sun King will have prizes and giveaways on hand for a few lucky winners and the Naptown Roller Girls will be there to join in on the fun.

According to a 2011 national study, 28 percent of all Americans have some sort of a criminal record. Other studies and estimates suggest that as many as 75 percent of us have a family member with a criminal record.

While not everyone serves time in prison for his or her crimes, once one is caught up in the tides of the criminal justice system it is very difficult to escape. Most have no job and no home to return to. Without these foundational elements, the rate of reoffending and returning to the criminal justice system in the U.S. exceeds 66 percent. More than half of all ex-offenders returning to Indianapolis and Marion County end up back in prison.

At RecycleForce, we offer people a second chance by giving electronics a second chance. We are a social enterprise offering comprehensive and innovative recycling services while providing transitional jobs to formerly incarcerated individuals.

We are R2-certified and recycle just about everything, but our primary focus is on electronic waste. We like to say that if it has a cord, we can recycle it!

We collect electronic waste and other recyclables from residents and corporate partners, deconstruct these items, recycle the materials, and dispose of the waste safely and cleanly. The scrap metals and other reusable materials collected in this process are then sold to help pay for life-changing workforce training to support our participants’ reentry back into society.

Since the founding of RecycleForce in 2006, we have recycled more 20 million pounds of material and successfully placed more than 400 ex-offender workers in full-time paid employment. The recidivism rate for these workers has been only 25 percent – significantly less that the local and national averages.

 Indy Winter Farmers Market Vegetable Highlight for February: Turnips

 

Turnips get a bad rap. Admit it, you have overlooked them. Plain white or purple-pink and white, these root veggies are often sidelined for their potato and carrot cousins. But they are an easy-to-grow legume and have a variety of uses that might help you find ways to increase your veggie intake.

First, there are a few different kinds of turnips you can buy. Let’s skip turnip greens for now, as those are fairly more familiar and have their own recipes of note later on in the season (though we love this recipe: Mixed Greens with Turkey , or this spicy veggie version). Purple and white turnips are usually softball sized and often come without their leaves. These turnips are often cooked roasted, braised, or in soups. They are a great addition to roasted vegetables and rice. Sometimes they are pickled. Try this recipe for Turnips in Mustard Sauce. The smaller, often white turnips are most often used for salads. You can slice these and eat raw in salads for an added crunch and spice (as in this recipe from the New York Times).

When choosing turnips, look for smooth skins and a sweet-like aroma. Once you get them home to cook, wash the skin before chopping or slicing. Peeling is optional. Turnip flavor, mild and slightly peppery, goes well with other root vegetables, mushrooms, bacon, and onions.

For pairing with a turnip, Sun King recommends one of two beers. If you’re making a salad and using fresh raw turnips, go with Sunlight Cream Ale. Cream Ale will pair well with the delicate and sometimes citrusy flavors of the salad while also cutting through the bitter, spicy, almost radish like quality of the fresh turnip. If you decide to cook your turnips and serve them roasted, braised, or in soups, then we recommend going with Wee Mac Scottish Ale. The richness of Wee Mac’s malt will be a perfect complement to the hearty nature of the warm root vegetable.

reCYCLE pARTS Artist Spotlight: Julia Whiteker

Julia Whiteker is an explorer.  An explorer that likes to try new things.  One that likes to imagine different futures and spend time looking for the rough edges and interesting characters in her neighborhood and town.

She expresses herself creatively through writing and video and through her work as a breast cancer nurse.  Julia loves biking and the Monon Trail, so when she saw a notice for the reCYCLE pARTS project she signed on without a plan, any artistic training or experience.

“Every step of this creation has been exhilarating, challenging, and rewarding.”  - Julia Whiteker.  Julia feels opened up in a new way and is excited to learn and do more art.

You will have the chance to meet Julia at the March 1st, reCYCLE pARTS event at the Stutz benefitting Freewheelin’, INDYCOG, and World Bike Relief.

 Calling all Peter Pans!  Let the inner child in you out for an evening and join in on a night full of fun at Adult Swim at The Children’s Museum on Saturday, February 23rd.  For one night only, The Children’s Museum will be transforming into a five-story playground for adults including DJs, drinks, tasty-treats, fun games, and more!

 Sun King’s own Cicerone Eric Fear and Chemist James Hellmuth guide you in how to be a brewmaster in Scienceworks!  While onsite you will have the opportunity to blend your own Sun King beer versions.  Everyone will start with the same four versions of our much loved Wee Mac, but where you finish…that’s up to you!

 You will also have the chance to design your own Hot Wheels car.  How cool is that?  The fun does not end there!  Find your inner Picasso at the NUVO Art Wall, dance your booty off in Dinosphere, or if that’s not your thing, head over to the Take Me There Egypt and participate in drumming and dancing with the hypnotic hula-hoop dancers.

Sara McCracken, a feature reCYCLE pARTS artist, describes her reCYCLE pARTS piece, “as a challenge to incorporate several pieces of broken and discarded bicycle parts to make an image that would convey the enthusiasm and excitement that competitive cyclists have for their sport.”  She photographed seven individual stationary bicycle parts.  She reassembled them into a dynamic interpretation of the thrill of cycling at speed.

What is iPhoneography?  This relative new art form began sweeping the art scene around 2007 when one of the first version of iPhones were available to the general public.  ”iPhoneography is an art of creating photos with an Apple iPhone.  It’s a style of mobile photography that differs from other forms of digital photography in that images are shot and processed on the iOS device.” – wikipedia

“Initially I was impressed with the photographic capabilities of the iPhone but it was not until I was able to blend images that I realized the potential for abstraction, and I became obsessed with the medium.” – Sara McCracken

Sara’s background is in abstract painting and sculpture, prior to embracing iPhoneography.  She incorporates a variety of materials in her works, including steel, wood, stone and found objects.  ”It was a natural progression to incorporate my previous abstract sculptural explorations into my iPhone art.” said McCracken.

Unfortunately Sara will not be able to attend the reCYCLE pARTS event.  She is expecting her first grandchild around the show opening date!  Her piece will be displayed among the 19 selected pieces and will be available for purchase with 30% going to charities.

ASI-logo-squareThe Autism Society of Indiana is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the support and guidance of those affected by autism throughout the state.  We believe that “those affected” is not limited to just individuals diagnosed, but also their families, friends, teachers, peers and communities.  ASI provides individualized information and support referrals to anyone searching for answers, advice or the next step.  Autism is a lifelong disability, and we are advocates through all stages of life, from birth to diagnosis to adulthood.  Autism doesn’t have an age limit for who it affects, therefore we don’t have an age limit for who we help.

 

Everyone at ASI is affected by autism directly, therefore we know what it feels like when a diagnosis is made, when a child struggles to adapt socially and when normal activities can become overwhelming struggles.  Our Allies, stationed around the state, receive dozens of calls a week and offer first-hand recommendations for those who are confused or in dire need of direction; teachers who need help dealing with a student, parents who aren’t sure where to go and who to talk to about testing their child/children or friends who want to be supportive of those on the spectrum.  Not only does ASI provide informational support, we also are here for emotional support, whenever it is needed.

 

ASI puts on many events throughout the year: pumpkin runs, walks, cocktail hours, the Annual Excellence Awards, the Indiana Autism Expos, and much more, all in the name of raising awareness for the autism community.  People tend to be nervous around and off put by those who are different and misunderstood.  It is our mission to bring to light what autism is, and isn’t, so that people will have a better understanding of those on the spectrum.  Awareness leads to acceptance, and ASI is working towards both.  People with autism deserve it.

reCYCLE pARTS Artist Spotlight: Matt Sommers

Matt Sommers is a visual artist, composer, musician and producer that works in the Indianapolis area.  His portfolio includes multiple mediums; including sculpture, video, photography, illustration, and sound.

This seasoned artist’s artwork is often described as existing at the crossroads of mechanical and lyrical, blurring the lines between man-made and hand-made.  Techno/organic issues are addressed in his artwork.  Matt is concerned with the place that machines occupy in our lives, our spaces and our hearts.  ”These devices are conceived by people, and we see humanity in them.  Personality, behavior and intention – normally considered human attributes – are often observed in mechanical creations.  My work explores this phenomena.” – Matt Sommers

Shining Bright on Health at Sun King – A Blog about Healthy Living

Intro:

So now that everyone is back from the holidays and settling into their 2013 routines, it seems safe to say that things are still busier than ever. The way we live our lives today in this culture is filled with exhaustion, stress and over stimulation. These things can really weigh on us and are the root of many health problems. I hope you will take a few moments to read the tips below for ideas on how you can find some space and relaxation into your life.

Health Tips:

This month’s health tip addresses the fact that we now live in a time and space where everything is fast. An amazing man by the name of William Siff, was a guest teacher atKripalu and he said something that really hit home. He said (paraphrased), ‘We are never going to be healthy if we are constantly moving at such a fast pace. So, being able to slow down, even for a few minutes at a time, will make a huge difference in your health and happiness’.

Here are a few suggestions on how to make more time in your day:

  • Put your breakfast (suggestion: oatmeal) in a crockpot the night before and wake up to yummy smells. It will also insure you have breakfast.
  • When you sit down to eat, do that. Nothing else. Take a minute to appreciate what you have right in front of you and then actually chew and taste your food. This will help you feel more satisfied. Stop eating when you begin to feel full and allow your stomach to digest properly.
  • Try to spend as much time in nature as possible. A walk will do wonders!
  • Having troubles sleeping: wind down at least 1 hour before bed (2 is better). Try taking a warm bath. Don’t allow yourself to be in contact with bright screens or violent content right before bed. A good book or a fun art project and a cup of calming tea or warm turmeric milk (recipe below) is a great wrap up to the day.
  • Take time to meditate, even if you start out with only 5-10 minutes a day. Sitting quietly by yourself and allowing the body, mind and soul a few moments each day is one of the best gifts you can give yourself.

 

Your body craves a slower pace. How can we expect our bodies to heal or feel energized if it is always running on fumes? Give yourself time to refuel. Don’t think that because you are not driving, talking on the phone, at your computer, sending emails, in a meeting, running from one appointment to the next, picking up kids, cooking dinner, washing clothes, cleaning the house or feeding the dog (that made me tired just typing all of it) that you are being lazy or not fulfilling your worth to be on this planet. Quite the contrary, you do more of a service for everyone, if you learn how to be more present and slow down.

 

Yoga in the community:

Donation yoga classes are taking place at Bike Hub YMCA from 9-10 am every Saturday until April. Check in at the front desk and they will direct you to the group fitness room.

IWFM + Yoga classes are offered by-donation to raise funds to support the IWFM andGrowing Places Indy in the ongoing work to cultivate wellness through urban agriculture, food awareness & access, and practices for empowered living. Suggested donation for Yoga is $10.

 

Recipes:

 

Sleepy Time Turmeric milk

Serves 2

2 cups organic, whole milk (raw milk if available)

¼ teaspoon turmeric

Dash of cinnamon

1/8 teaspoon nutmeg

2 teaspoons maple syrup

• Boil the first 4 ingredients together, then simmer for 5 minutes. Pour into 2 cups and divide the maple syrup among them.

Kale and Carrot Curry

Makes 4 servings

1 tablespoon ghee or sunflower oil

2-3 carrots, peeled and chopped

1 leek

2 teaspoons mustard seed

2 teaspoons yellow curry powder

2 tablespoons shredded, unsweetened, coconut

½ cup coconut milk

1 bunch kale, washed and chopped

¼ teaspoon salt

fresh cracked black pepper

 • Warm skillet with oil or ghee, then place the next 4 ingredients in the pan until carrots are tender. Mix in the rest of the ingredients until kale is wilted. Serve on its own or over brown rice.

 

Additional Recipe for a hearty cold weather dinner: Sweet potato and black bean encheladas (this couple is amazing at combining flavors so check out their website for more fun and creative recipes)

 

Workout tips

Keeping the blood flowing through our bodies is very important. With all the sitting we do, it is good to get up at least every 2 hours to stretch and pump the blood. Easy exercises to do anywhere are: Lunges, squats, high kicks (front, back or side), push ups and sit ups. Just pick a new one each time and by the end of the day you will have done a mini full body workout.

Additional tip:  Now that you have time, what do you do? You take time to decompress, relax, unwind and enjoy. Take the time to do some meditation, pranayama, yoga, read a book that you have been wanting to pick up, get crafty and start an art project, play with your kids or friends, just do something that allows your adrenalin to slow down and release its fingers of stress on your body. And if nothing else, breathe deeply into your body and appreciate that for what it is.

Born and raised in Homer, Alaska, the western most tip of the United States, was not appreciated by my siblings or myself until we all went out into the world, and found that we grew up in a pretty amazing place. Alaska is a rugged frontier but it has its perks. Eating fresh vegetables from the garden, fish and seafood out of the bay, and a freshly hunted down moose/elk/deer was and still is the way of feeding family there. Fitness is a way of life; hiking, mountain biking, fishing, skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and sledding (yes, it can be a great work out when you walk up the mountain) to name a few. The connection with nature seems to be a common understanding when you live in such a beautiful, ever changing environment as Alaska. With that background, I have come to love yoga and the connection it has seamlessly brought me in regards to myself, my family and friends, nature, and healthy living. I have a Masters in Public Health, but the everyday healthy lifestyle I have learned from my mom and dad and those like them back home. I am also currently going to school to train in Ayurveda Medicine (one of the oldest forms of medicine known to mankind), which focuses on healing the body, mind and spirit and maintaining health through food, herbs and exercise. My studies in yoga and Ayurveda are allowing me to bring practical, resourceful and sustainable practices to anyone who wants to learn how to get/stay healthy in mind, body and spirit.

Cooking with Sun King: Velvet Fog Chocolate Cake

Working for Sun King has certain perks, like getting a can of Velvet Fog before its official release.  Chef D decided to have some fun and baked a chocolate cake (P.S. – you can substitute Velvet Fog (because it’s a limited release) with Wee Mac!).

 

Velvet Fog Chocolate Cake

 

Velvet Fog Chocolate Cake

 

10 ounces all purpose flour

16 oz sugar

3 oz cocoa powder

10 grams baking soda

5 grams baking powder

a heavy pinch of salt

8 ounces sour cream

8 oz Velvet Fog

2 oz Old Pogue Bourbon

3 ounces vegetable oil

2 eggs at room temperature

½ ounce Bourbon Barrel Vanilla Extract or good vanilla extract

Butter for greasing

 

Preheat the oven to 350*.  Butter two 8 inch round cake pans.  Line with parchment paper, then butter and dust with flour.

Combine flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, & salt together in the work bowl of your stand mixer.  Mix on low with paddle attachment.  In another bowl, combine sour cream, Velvet Fog, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract.  Once mixed, slowly add the wet ingredients to the dry.  Scrape down the sides of the bowl.

Evenly distribute the batter between the two prepared pans.  Bake for 35-40 minutes or until a tooth pick inserted comes out clean.  Cool in the pans for 45 minutes, then turn out on a cooling rack to cool completely.

 

Mason County Butter Cream Frosting

8 ounces semi sweet chocolate chips

2 oz Old Pogue Bourbon – or your favorite bourbon

8 ounces butter at room temperature

28 ounces powdered sugar

4 ounces heavy cream

½ ounce bourbon barrel vanilla extract

Pinch of salt

 

In a double boiler melt chocolate and bourbon.  Cool to room temperature.

 

In the work bowl of your stand mixer, combine the sugar, butter, heavy cream, vanilla, & salt.  Mix on low until combined.  Scrape down the bowl.  Increase the speed to medium, add the chocolate and bourbon mixture, mix until incorporated.  Add heavy cream if mixture seems dry, a teaspoon at a time.  Place one layer on a cake stand.  Frost the top.  Invert the second layer, top with remaining frosting.  Coat the top and down the sides.

The holiday season is a time of year filled with fun, festivities, and time with family. The glowing lights, the delicious holiday cookies, and the crisp weather all make the season wonderful. As an animal lover, I also look forward to the extra time I get to spend snuggling on the couch with my two dogs, Angel and Rocky.

When I am spending time with my own dogs, I can’t help but wish that all dogs had a couch to snuggle on like mine do. Sadly, many dogs are forgotten in backyards chained in all weather and are longing for affection. Thankfully, there is help for these animals. Friends of Indianapolis Dogs Outside is an all-volunteer group (founded in 2005) that focuses on helping dog owners to improve the quality of life for their outside dogs.

FIDO’s mission and grassroots approach to help some of the neediest dogs in our city motivated me to get involved in FIDO’s important work. You see, once you get involved with a mission like FIDO’s, you feel charged with the task of doing incredible work that will undoubtedly change the life of a dog forever.

Life is hard for outside dogs and neglected animals need all the help they can get. Here are just a few ways to get involved with FIDO:
• Report a dog in need: If you see an animal in need, don’t turn away – tell someone. To find the best agency to call (some situations are best for Animal Care and Control to investigate because FIDO does not have the ability to enforce animal-related law), visit our website and click on the tab: “Report a Dog in Need.”

• Donate money or supplies: As an all-volunteer 501(c)3 non-profit, we rely exclusively on generous in-kind and monetary donations. To view a list of items we need, visit our website.

• Volunteer your time: Perhaps the best thing you can do to help further FIDO’s mission of helping chained and neglected dogs is to volunteer your time. We need volunteers to help assemble fencing, transport materials, answer phone calls, distribute food at our pet food pantry, or join our outreach team and go door-to-door helping pet owners.

All of us at FIDO are so grateful for the opportunity to work with Sun King to make Indianapolis a better place for animals. We’re especially excited to be working with Sun King on an exciting project in the coming months—stay tuned for more details!
